Robert M. Kaplan’s new book ‘The Prophet of Psychiatry: In Search of Reginald Ellery’ is the first full-length biography of an Australian psychiatrist.
The subject of the movie ‘Between Wars’, Reg Ellery was the most prominent psychiatrist of his day. A pioneer in treatment, promoter of psychoanalysis, he fought for patients’ rights, challenged the establishment and was the subject of a Royal Commission. He was a leading figure on the Melbourne cultural scene through his involvement with such figures as Max Harris, John Reed, Sydney Nolan and Albert Tucker. A communist, he visited the Soviet Union in 1937. He was known to many through his books, notably ‘Schizophrenia: the Cinderella of psychiatry’ and ‘Psychiatric aspects of modern warfare’.
